The Pearson Current
VOL. 7, #4

2002

Publisher’s log

As I write this log for the last issue of our seventh year of service to Pearson owners, it is a sunny Monday morning. This weekend was supposed to have been spent on "Satori." Work obligations had prevented me from sailing since Labor Day. As luck would have it, the entire weekend was a washout with Hurricane Kyle generating gusts up to 25 knots. I am now even more pleased with my decision to keep "Satori" in the water all winter and will steal a weekend or two at some point to make up for many lost trips this summer and fall. Speaking of Kyle, BOATUS sent me (and possibly you) notice of a website they created to help us track hurricanes better. The URL is http://www.

boatus.com/hurricanes/tracking.asp.

I have been building a file of articles, reviews, and news related to Pearson Yachts and thought it might be useful to highlight some of the more recent as this issue’s lead. Always pleased to see Pearsons in the news, we owe a debt of gratitude to the many great sailing publications that still appreciate these fine boats. The NPYOA encourages all its members to send articles of interest so we can add them to our growing inventory of information on Pearson models.

Jack and Janice Stevenson sent us a beautiful photo of "Bluegrass," their 1980 P365 (#2). It looks so serene that I could not resist reprinting it. We are gradually receiving photos of member-owned Pearsons and when we do, we add them to our online "Pearson Marina." If you have a special refit or addition to your Pearson, please send it to us with a short description so that we can add it. Your ideas and upgrades are valuable to all of us.

We’ve received requests to put together a membership list for distribution. We do our best each year to add to our services and do so based on renewals. If there are funds left after expenses are covered, a decision is made about which of the several ideas on the table would best serve the membership. The past year or so, we worked on creating the Marina, compiling Bill Shaw’s writings/ contributions to the association for member access, and significantly upgraded our online services.

We are exploring ways to best compile the membership list so that it will be as useful as possible to members. If renewals warrant, we might be able to get the list out at some point next spring. When we first started, we received several messages requesting that we not release membership names to anyone. The concern was that member’s names and addresses would find their way onto commercial listings. That was something several members wanted to avoid. As we move towards putting this list together, we will put out a call for anyone who wishes not be included. Should this still prove to be of concern to many members (as it was the last time we considered compiling this list), we will have to figure out some other way of providing this service.

Another idea on the table is to have upcoming issues of TPC feature a different Pearson model. Our objective would be to highlight our sister associations that have been put together by individual groups centered on a specific model. We received great cooperation from Chip Lawson last spring when we chose to feature the P40. We have put out feelers to several of these associations and look forward to supporting them. If you wish to add your model to upcoming feature issues, please let us know as soon as possible.

In closing, a note about the possibility of group-chartering a fleet to one of several places instead of organizing a rendezvous. The Mediterranean was high on most people’s list, so I did some research into the possibility of a group discount. We were informed that if we had enough members expressing an interest, a discount could be offered. Please e-mail me if you have any interest in doing this next summer. If the Med. is the choice, I am told that early in the season is better than later. Please let us know soon because we were also told that the earlier we could commit, the better the deal.

Thanks again for your continued support, ideas and suggestions. As we start our eighth year, I recognize that the NPYOA wouldn’t exist without the terrific participation of our valued members. I wish you smooth and safe sailing.
