PEARSON 22 RACING TIPS

Typical of fin keel spade rudder boats, the 22 is sensitive to the helm and gives a quick, definite response to tiller movement.  Don't over-react.  Let the boat sail herself more - steady the helm and use as little tiller as is necessary.

Properly balanced, the 22 sails to weather with practically no helm.  Slight weather helm is favorable and obtained by mainsail adjustment.

Keep her on her feet.  She sails best with a very slight angle of heel stretching the waterline to its maximum.  Main sets well for breeze at hand by adjusting backstay.  The harder it blows, the more backstay tension you want for sail set, headstay rigidity, etc.

22's center of buoyancy is located approximately at rear edge of forward cabin window.  Center your weight around this point.

The 22 must be kept moving.  Too much of a jib luff to weather stalls her out - keep the jib full and slack main if necessary.

Downwind keep her flat with bow slightly down to prevent stern drag.

Reaching, play the waves to get the 22 surfing.

Have fun - she's a great boat.
